Pollution is reduced in a liquid area by a floating device (100) comprising an hydrophobic material (130) which absorbs oil. This material is enclosed in a number of alveoli between sheets of material permeable by oil and water above (160) and below (150). The alveoli are sealed by joining, by heating the upper and lower sheets in the areas between alveoli.
