A new nuclear spin tomography apparatus, has a magnetic system (1) to pre-polarise nuclear spin in the subject under examination (8). A second magnetic system (9), with comparatively lower field strength, sets up additional magnetic field gradients. A high frequency (HF) unit (3) excites nuclear spin and detects the nuclear resonance signals arising. A significant new feature is a further system (5, 6, 7) supplying hyper-polarised gas to the subject (8). The HF unit is capable of receiving nuclear resonance signals from the hyper-polarised gas.
