摘要 <p>A display includes a layer of NCPT liquid crystal material (1) capable of modulating both internal UV radiation (20) and ambient light (30) impinging on the device from the viewing side, in order to combine an emissive function with a reflective function. For emission the UV radiation is selectively applied to phosphors (11) on the viewing side, while for reflection the ambient light is selectively reflected by the liquid crystal. The two functions operate together as each display cell is switched between an 'off' state in which ambient light penetrates the display, being absorbed in a black background (25), while the input radiation is prevented from reaching the phosphors and hence from causing output, and an 'on' state in which the ambient light is scattered from the liquid-crystal layer (thus being visible in daylight) and the input radiation (20), likewise scattered, reaches the phosphor (11) and causes it to emit (thus being visible in the dark).</p>
