<p>A reverse osmosis membrane unit (20) that has been fouled by a fouling fluid flow in a forward direction (54) is cleaned by cycling a cleaning fluid past the membrane in cycles of forward flow (54) and reverse flow (56) opposite to the forward flow. The ratio of the time in reverse flow (56) is greater than 1, and preferably from about 1.5 to about 4.0. The duration of each cleaning cycle of forward flow (54) and reverse flow (56) is no more than about 100 seconds.</p> |
