A suction head for a vacuum cleaner has a multi-part housing with a chamber for roller brushes rotating about a horizontal axis, located behind a suction window in the bottom of the housing. In the brush chamber is at least one sliding lid for the window that moves between open and closed positions. The suction head has a weight-controlled adjuster with a ground sensor moving the lid into the closed position if the head is raised from the ground, allowing the sensor to hang freely. When the head is replaced on the ground, the sensor makes the lid open.
