A battery element of a lead acid battery including a negative plate and a positive plate, having one or more efficiency improving additives including a metal inhibiting additive that reduces the detrimental effects of soluble metal impurity on the efficiency of the negative plate and a macroporous porosity enhancing additive that improves the active material utilization efficiency of the battery.
