An agent for decontaminating waste waters, especially for cyanide- and chromate detoxification and separation of heavy metals from effluent waters, is made by mixing sulphur with water, stirring for 1-3 hours and subsequently adding alkali metal hydroxide in a weight ratio water:sulphur:alkali metal hydroxide of 5:1:1 to 3:2:2.
