To test the tightness of the closure (5) for small containers (1), such as vials, which consists of an elastic sealing element (6) and a flanged cap (8) which presses the element (6) against the mouth rim (3) of the vial (1), the sealing force which seats the sealing element (6) on the mouth rim (3) of the small container is measured. For this purpose a test probe (30) is pressed against the closure (5) and the resulting force gradient is measured. During normal closure (5) the force gradient increases steeply until levelling off at a force which corresponds to the sealing force. The measuring curve (a, b) of the force gradient is compared to a standard force gradient profile which a normal closure (5) has. If the measuring curve deviates from the standard profile, the small container (1) is classified as sub-standard and rejected.
