A process is disclosed for upgrading SiC heating elements by surface refinement. The object of the invention is therefore to create a process for upgrading SiC heating elements which achieves a substantial improvement in the service life of the SiC heating elements. The invention is characterised in that the SiC heating elements are first subjected to an acid treatment with inorganic acids or inorganic mixed acids, then are impregnated several times with a colloidal solution of a siloxane compound consisting of Si(OC2H5)4, C2H5OH, distilled water and HCl, the main component being Si(OC2H5)4, as well as antioxidants which consist of SiO2 produced by hydrolysing Si(OC2H5)4, Al2O3 and/or ZrO2, and are finally subjected for a short time to a thermal treatment at a temperature of about 1500 DEG C.
