The winding device is for an awning or sunshade. It has a roller (16) with a bearing (46) at one end and a bearing housing (28) with a manual drive mechanism at the other end. The mechanism includes a rod or shaft (24) with a hand crank and a hooked end which may engage an eye (26) on the lower end of a vertical shaft with a bevel gear at its top end. The vertical shaft runs in a ball bearing (30). The bevel gear on top of this shaft meshes (32) with a bevel gear on a horizontal shaft with a brake (34) and a spring-loaded (42) clutch (36) which connects the shaft with the bevel gear to the roller. The clutch may be released by pushing the winding eye upwards with the winding rod. A conical surface (40) above the winding eye engages the end of a spring-loaded (44) rod (38) and pushes it against the clutch to release it.
