Preparation of a floor or wall covering by dissolving fibres held together by a binder in water and then applying the paste to the surface, comprises the addition of a copolymer dye dispersion to the paste before application and then later applying at least one layer of pure acrylic dispersion onto the surface of the dried paste. Also claimed is a material used to make the paste, containing fibres and binder, with a separately added copolymer dye dispersion. Preferably a second acrylic layer is applied to the dried first acrylic layer. The paste contains 5-60 (30) vol.% dye dispersion. The acrylic dispersion can be diluted with water and contains no emulsifiers. Natural or synthetic fibres are used. The binder is methyl cellulose and/or potato starch. Metal fibres and/or mica components can be added.
