Processing of protein-containing body fluids

A protein-containing fluid, for example, ascitic fluid is removed from a patient by paracentesis. The fluid is held in a reservoir (10) and filtered by a plasmapheresis filter (13) and a positively charged nylon membrane (20) before being in a condition for return to the body. This filtration is designed to remove componants such as cells, cell fragments, fibrin, endotoxins and other particulate contaminations from the ascitic fluid and thus to reduce the incidence of fever and other unwanted side effects.
