A motion compensated video signal processing apparatus, in which motion vectors are generated to represent image motion between a pair of input images of an input video signal, comprises a means for comparing blocks of the pair of input images to generate a plurality of correlation surfaces. Each correlation surface is examined to detect points of maximum correlation within the correlation surface and a motion vector is generated from the detected points of maximum correlation. The apparatus also provides detection of a plurality of points of maximum correlation within a correlation surface for a block, and assigns coresponding motion vectors accordingly. A plurality of motion vectors can be assigned to a block by growing the correlation surfaces (see figs. 4a - 4f) and detecting the points of maximum correlation in the original and combined correlation surfaces. <IMAGE> |
