The mixture of straw and dung is ventilated by a current of air. Separate parallel air conduits (11) are incorporated in the floor and are connected to a common air-supply conduit (12). Each of the first conduits has fine-mesh outlet gratings (14) evenly-spaced over the floor. The supply conduit can be at right angles to the first ones and connected to them roughly at their mid-points. The first conduits can be countersunk in the concrete, each being covered by a fine-mesh grille or a plate with grilles evenly spaced in its lengthwise direction.
