PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract a feature value from a picture pattern of a circular object such as a coin as a shape independent of the rotational angle of the circular object and to reduce operation quantity for identifying the object. SOLUTION: The center of a circular object is found out from its multi-valued gradation picture pattern and the pixel values of the pattern are expressed by polar coordinates g(r,θ) setting up the center as a pole. Transformed data x (a, b) determined in each combination of parameters (a), (b) is found out by integration based upon the equation, WhereΨa ,b (r) is an weight function expanded from the center of the circular object like a circular slit, and in the case of a Gabor function e.g. (b) corresponds to a radius from the center up to the maximum amplitude part of the weight function and (a) corresponds to the frequency of wave motion.
