PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a dialkyl nitrophthalate derivative useful as an intermediate for medicines or organic chemical products in high yield without hydrolyzing the ester groups. SOLUTION: A dialkyl phthalate derivative represented by the formula (R<1> and R<2> are each an alkyl or a cycloalkyl) is nitrated with O2 and/or are containing a nitrogen oxide and O3 by using a metal such as Fe and/or its compound, an inorganic acid or an organic acid as a catalyst. The amount of the metal and/or its compound is used in an amount of 0.001-5 atomic mol% based on the raw material. In the case of the Fe compound, the effects are high when the amount is 1-0.001 atomic mol%. The inorganic acid, e.g. H2 SO4 or the organic acid, e.g. methanesulfonic acid is used in an amount of <=10mol% based on the raw material. For example, NO or NO2 is used alone or in a mixture as the nitrogen oxide and the molar amount thereof is 2-5 times, based on the raw material and expressed in terms of N atoms. O3 is used in a molar amount of 1-2 times based on the raw material. The reactional temperature is -30 to +100 deg.C. |
