PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently, industrially and advantageously produce a ditrimethylolpropane by reacting ditrimethylolpropane with 2-ethylacrolein and formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) Trimethylolpropane is reacted with (B) 2-ethylacrolein and (C) formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst (e.g. sodium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, trimethylamine or tributylamine) to produce ditrimethylolpropane. The component A is used in an amount of preferably 3.0-5.0mol based on 1mol component B. The component C is used in an amount of preferably 2.1-2.3mol based on 1mol component B. The amount of the catalyst is preferably 1.1-1.3mol based on 1mol component B. Furthermore, the low- boiling raw materials or by-products are distilled, recovered and removed from the reactional product after completing the reaction and the reactional product is recrystallized from water to afford the ditrimethylolpropane. The recovered materials can be circulated for use. |
