The invention relates to a device for assembling metal sheets or the like using shapewise fitting, or mechanically, in which device: - an assembly unit is composed of a punch (20) and of a die (24), in which - the punch (20) can be urged, via an actuating device (14) in the direction for moving closer to and docking against the die (24) and is arranged so that it can free itself therefrom, - the die (24) is positioned movably in a housing (32), coaxially with respect to the direction of displacement of the punch (20), and - is guided on a pivot bearing (36) at its opposite end from the punch (20).
