The gauge (1) has two arms (2,3) each having a threaded bore (4) enclosed by an envelope (5). The first arm (2) is movable with respect to the second arm (3) fixed with the aid of guides and drives to allow the adjustment of the spacing between the two arms as a function of the size of the staple to be fitted. The guide and drive assembly can be formed by an endless screw (6) in engagement with a toothed wheel (7) fixed on a shaft (8) carried by a movable arm (2).
