The depth adjustable steering column has its shaft located in a tube body comprising two telescopic tubes (2,3). A sleeve (5) located between the two tubes has radially flexible projecting tongues which come into contact with at least one of the tubes. The tongues are longitudinally orientated parallel to the tube axes (4). The sleeve has a pin (9) which is engaged in an opening (13) in one of the tubes and holds the sleeve in position. At one end the sleeve has a collar (8) which abuts against the external tube (2).
