The device includes an external interface (PCMCIA) for the connection of units adapted for the external interface, and a processor unit (CPU) as well as further internal device components for booting the device into an initial condition after switching the device on. A mechanically or electrically functioning switch (U) is provided, through which the external interface is connected directly to the processor unit and the internal components (IBP) for booting are simultaneously disconnected from the processor unit after an activation. The processor unit performs the boot procedure over the external interface if the switch is operated. The switch is pref. mechanically coupled to the external interface, so that it is activated when an external unit is inserted in the interface.
