Axle drive mechanism on heavy goods vehicle

The bearing supports (6) are for a drive shaft (2) in a lorry. The end of the shaft the bearings and the bevel gears (3,4) driving an axle (5) of the lorry are accommodated inside a closed housing (1). There are carrier arms (7a,b) on either side, with apertures accommodating the axle and bolted to the edges of the apertures in the sides of the housing accommodating the axle. The frame with the carrier arms may have a transverse beam (12) and two mounting points (10) at the end of the casing (1a) where the drive shaft enters it. There is a single mounting point (11) at the other end of the casing.
