The archiving system (4) contains a short-term archive in the form of a ring memory (6), a long-term archive (8) and a special balance archive (10). It is connected by data lines (12,14) to a data server (16) in a transparent access plane. Process data are read out from the system and transferred to an operating unit (26) in accordance with a request (22) for selected parameters (Pl-Pn). An exchange archive (WA) connected to the data server holds data models (DM) describing the plant process. Time spans or instants are determined for the archival storage of process data by an information server (46).
