One or more pistons (10) working in cylinders (12) are driven via connecting rods from a crankshaft, while valves (20,22) control the suction and discharge ports (24,26). The valves float freely between seats and stops, and are moved by the flowing medium, particularly oxygen. The suction valve can consist of a supporting ring (34) with two opposite lugs (36,38) which form sealing bodies. The discharge valve can likewise comprise a supporting ring (42) joined by one or more ribs (46) to a small plate (44) forming the sealing body. A damping component (51) can be provided for the sealing body, typically consisting of a supporting ring (52) with a tongue (50) extending inwards over part of its diameter.
