The method involves transforming unsorted and untreated business or municipal waste, in fine-crushed form subsequent to a multiple-stepped crushing, through combustion with an oxygen-containing burning agent to a fusible slag. The slag is granulated in a water bath. Solids from the cleaning of the flue gas are returned to the smelting process. The fine crushing of non-accessible materials is isolated from the waste mixture after a precrushing. The waste components with large surface area-/mass proportions are isolated, agglomerated and fine-crushed with crushed surface area-/mass proportions after crushing.
