A suction strainer (100) for straining water from the emergency suppression pool of a boiling water reactor includes a plurality of stacked, perforated disks (102a-102f) having an internal core (105) with a minimum internal radius r(x) (106) that decreases with increased distance from the intake (110) of the strainer, so that the core (105) has a tapered profile. Internal radius r(x) (106) may vary linearly (186) or exponentially (166) or a combination of both. The stacked, perforated disks (102a-102f) each include a first surface (112a-112f) that faces in the direction of the intake and a second surface (116a-116e), that faces away from the intake. A circumferential band (114a-114f) may connect the first and second surfaces together.
