The assembly to generate a biogas from the fermentation of a thick fluid medium, such as liq. manure, has a cleaner (51) for the heat exchanger (20) connected to the plate-shaped mixers (52). As the mixer (52) is operated in the vessel (10), the cleaner (51) is moved axially along the wall of the heat exchanger (20). Pref. the cleaner is a lip (51) of rubber, and the like, at the edge of the plate-shaped mixer (52) towards the wall of the heat exchanger, extending at an upwards angle. The vessel (10) has a warming chamber (13) and/or outflow chamber (14) next to the fermentation chambers (11.12), also with mixers (60,61) which move axially within the vessel and also scrape the wall of the heat exchanger. They have a surface parallel to the chamber wall and other surfaces which form an acute angle to the first surface and, at least on the outer surface, a material with good sliding characteristics either of or coated with a plastic. ADVANTAGE - The heat exchanging capacity is maintained over long and continuous use, as build-up of material is prevented on the heat exchange surfaces which would act as a barrier.
