The invention relates to a filter with a multi-piece filter body (10) having a filter head (12) which is connected to a filtering pot (14) having at least one filter element (18). Said filter element has a support tube (20) surrounded by a filter mat (24), the free ends thereof being provided with element fixtures (26, 28). At least one of the element fixtures (26) is rigidly connected to the support tube (20) and can be placed in contact with the filter head (12). An intermediate member (38) is arranged, at least at that end of the filter mat (24) at which the element fixture (26) is connected to the filter head (12), between said element fixture and said end of the filter mat (24), and can be removed along with the filter mat (24) from the support tube (20) which remains connected to the filter head (12). Axial support of the end caps of the cylindrical filter element is achieved in that a possible fluid passage point, in particular a gap (52, 52a) which can be closed after the start of operation by the resulting fluid differential pressure is provided in the axial mounting direction at least between one part of the intermediate members (38, 39) and the associated element fixtures (26, 28), when a filter mat (24) is mounted on the support tube (20), thereby providing reliable control also of high differential pressures.
