The method involves passing data about the transfer characteristics of one unit to the other unit at the start of the exchange. A control signal causes the transmission rate from a unit with a lower reception rate to be raised to the effective data reception rate of the other unit. The transmission rate can be raised to the maximum reception rate of the terminal.
