Regenerating used hydrogenation catalyst

Regenerating a used hydrogenation catalyst comprises: (a) providing a catalyst with a carrier material selected from an inorganic acid-zeolite compound, carbon and zeolite, and with a catalytically active metal phase selected from partially reduced group Ib metals and completely reduced group VIII metals, where the metal phase is 0.03 wt.% and the catalyst has an initial diolefin hydrogenation activity; (b) treating a carbon starting material having a diolefin content of 0.1 wt.% or more and a nitrile content of 2 ppm or more, with the catalyst until the initial diolefin-hydrogenation activity of the catalyst is reduced to a reduced activity; (c) rinsing the catalyst with an inert gas to remove traces of hydrocarbon from the catalyst and recover the catalyst; and (d) regenerating the catalyst by flushing the catalyst with hydrogen to recovering the catalyst which has a regenerated diolefin hydrogenation activity, which is larger than the reduced activity.
