Method for decontaminating an area where earth, several metres deep, has a radioactively contaminated surface layer, where the novelty is that a strip (1), a few metres wide and to at least the full contaminated depth, is removed with a helical mill (3); a second mill (4) removes uncontaminated subsoil (2) to a depth of at least one metre; a sealing layer (13) is spread over the floor of the trench (5); a conveyor (8) spreads contaminated rubble from the surface strip (1) over the sealing layer (13); uncontaminated subsoil (2) is spread by a conveyor (9) on top of the contaminated material and compacted (11); and the mills (2,4) and conveyors are operated continuously or intermittently.
