The vacuum cleaner has a pivoted lid 3 with at least two partly curved arms 4 which are inserted into corresponding slots in the cleaner housing 1 and slide in them. There are catches on the arms which lock the lid in its open position. The arms are I-shaped but asymmetrical about the centre line through the stem of the I. At the top and the bottom, the cross ribs ie, head and foot are of unequal length. The larger length is half the width of the slot. The catches are on these longer ribs and the height of the catches equals at most the difference between the unequal lengths. The arms may in fact be Z-shaped.
