Preparation of polyorganosilloxanes by interfacial polymerization

Manufacturing a copolymer is claimed, comprising: (A) reacting: (i) a non-aqueous, organic solvent solution of a dihalo organosilicon compound or a diacyloxy organosilicon compound at or near an interface formed by the non-aqueous organic solvent solution; and (ii) an immiscible non-aqueous organic solvent solution of a silanolate or organosilanolate of formula R"xSi(OM)4-x (I) or MO(R"2SiO)nM (II) (where R" = 16C alkyl radical, an aryl radical, an alkenyl radical, an alkylamino radical, or an epoxy radical; x = 0-2; n = at least one; and M = alkali metal); and (B) recovering the copolymer at or near the interface of the solvent solutions. Preferably the organic solvent for (i) is selected from diphenyl ether, mineral oil, hexane, and acetonitrile; and the organic solvent for (ii) is selected from cyclohexane, a polyethylene glycol [400] of the formula H(OCH2CH2)nOH (I) (where n = 400) and dimethylformamide. The silanolate or organosilanolate has the formula MO(R"2SiO)nM (II) where n = 1-20, preferably potassium polydimethylsilanolate KO[(CH3)2SiO]nK where n = 3-20. The dihaloorganosilicon compound is an organodichlorosilane selected from 2-acetoxyethylmethyldichlorosilane, 3-acethoxypropylmethyldichlorosilane, allylmethyldichlorosilane, amyldichlorosilane, amylmethyldichlorosilane, 5-(bicycloheptenyl)methyldichlorosilane, 2-(bicycloheptyl)methyldichlorosilane, bis-(3-chloropropyl)dichlorosilane, bis(3-cyanopropyl)dichlorosilane, 4-butenyldichloromethylsilane, 2-(carbomethoxy) ethy1methy1dich1orosi1ane, 2-chloroethylmethyldichlorosilane.
