A catalytic converter monitor uses two oxygen sensors (20,22) disposed respectively upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter (16). During a testing period, the air-to-fuel ratio is biased rich and lean transitions are then produced to generate excess oxygen ions in the exhaust gas. The lean transitions produce signal peaks in the sensor signals. The time during which the downstream sensor signal exceeds a predetermined threshold is compared to the equivalent time for the upstream sensor (20). The time differences are related to the oxygen storage capacity of the converter (16). Such measurement makes use of sensor signal levels and is substantially unrelated to sensor response times, which can vary to give inaccurate results. Close-loop control is maintained during testing.

|
