PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely judge the combusting state by setting the period for detecting angular velocity state within a range from the crank angle where combustion is substantially terminated to the crank angle near the combustion start timing of the following cylinder, and judging the combusting state on the basis of the fluctuation of angular velocity state determined at that time. SOLUTION: When the combusting state of each cylinder is judged in an ECU 40 receiving each detection signal from a crank angle sensor 13, a hot water sensor 14, an air flow meter 21, aλO2 sensor 32 or the like, the period of detecting angular velocity state is set to a prescribed crank angle section ranging from the crank angle where combustion is substantially terminated to the crank angle near the combustion start timing of the following cylinder. On the basis of the fluctuation of angular velocity state determined from the angular velocity state in this prescribed crank angle section, the combusting state is judged. The period for detecting the angular velocity state is preferably set within a range of 100-200 deg. after the top dead point by crank angle, and the prescribed crank angle section is set to 60 deg. or more.
