ADDITIVE FOR LUBRICATING OIL AND LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an additive for lubricating oils which markedly improves the cleaning performances of an engine oil and greatly reduces the amount of an ahsless cleaner/dispersant conventionally used by using a specified amine compound. SOLUTION: This additive comprises an amine compound obtained by reacting an aliphatic amine (e.g. beef tallow alkylpropylenediamine) having at least one 8 C or higher hydrocarbon group and desirably represented by the formula: R1 R2 N(ANH)PH (wherein R1 is an 8-24C linear hydrocarbon group; R2 is H or R1 ; A is an ethylene group or a propylene group; and p is 0-4) with a carbonyl compound, desirably HCHO, a 2-21C aldehyde or a 3-21C ketone. The amine compound is desirably one obtained by reacting the aliphatic amine with HCHO in an amount of 0.1-10mol per mol of the amine or one obtained by reacting the aliphatic amine with a 2-21C aldehyde or a 3-21C ketone in an amount of 0.7-2.0mol per mol of the amine.
