PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and compact projection type liquid crystal display device constituted so that a single-plate color liquid crystal display panel formed without a color filter is used as a light valve and the utilizing efficiency of light is high. SOLUTION: A red picture display area 2a, a blue picture display area 2b and a green picture display area 2c consisting of an active element matrix are separately formed on a single substrate. Besides, horizontal scanning circuits 3a, 3b and 3c and vertical scanning circuits 4a, 4b and 4c for driving the respective areas 2a, 2b and 2c are arranged to be adjacent to the respective areas 2a, 2b and 2c. Then, the liquid crystal display panel constituted so that the pitch of the respective pixel matrixes of three primary colors and/or the pitch of circuit elements between the areas of the respective pixel matrixes are made equal is used as the light valve. Then, white light is separated and used for irradiating the panel by a Kester type dichroic prism which is not shown in a figure. Besides, the light transmitted through the panel is synthesized by the Koester type dichroic prism and projected on a screen. |
