PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical material with low birefringence, excellent in transparency and resistances to heat, water, solvents, chemicals and oils, thus suitable for lens and optical sheet, etc., comprising a hydrogenated product of ring-opened polymer from specific polycyclic norbornene-based monomer(s). SOLUTION: This optical material comprises a hydrogenated product of ring-opened polymer from a polycyclic norbornene-based monomer(s) containing >=70wt.% of a norbornene-based monomer of the formula (the six-membered cyclic structure H may contain one or more double bonds) (e.g. 1,4-methano-1,4,4 a,9a-tetrahydrofluorene. The hydrogenated product has the following characteristics: the hydrogenation rate of the main chain double bond is >=98%, the hydrogenation rate of the six-membered cyclic structure H is >=90%, and number-average molecular weight determined by gel permeation chromatography is >=12000 in terms of polyisoprene. It is preferable that a rubbery polymer is dispersed in the hydrogenated product matrix in the form of microdomains of <=0.3μm in size.
