PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the coating property with little dropout of minute parts and to obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics by specifying the coating thickness of a magnetic layer and using a nonmagnetic base body having specified fisheye density on the surface where the coating layer is formed. SOLUTION: A nonmagnetic base body containing org. resin particles is produced to have such fisheye density that fisheyes of height H1 are 30 to 200 particles/100cm<2> and fisheyes of height H2 are <=10 particles/100cm<2> by controlling the temp. of a fused polyester film extruded through a die slit, or controlling the rotation of a drum or cooling temp. Thereby, good affinity with a binder resin as the matrix of the base body can be obtd., and dropping of a powder is prevented to decrease dropout. By forming a magnetic layer to 0.50 to 4.0μm thickness on the base body, excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics can be obtd. for magnetic recording with <=0.6μm shortest recording wavelength.
