A bath for the electroplating of objects with metal is conditioned by a H2O2/UV oxidation treatment. The bath consists of a metal specific basic deposit and an organic brightener and is contaminated with decomposition products stemming from its operation. The bath is freed from these products by the oxidation process which also oxidises the organic brightener. After oxidation, the concn. of brightener is restored to its former level by adding more. The oxidative conditioning process may be carried out from time to time in accordance with the concn. of the contaminants, or a portion of the volume of the bath may be drawn off into a circuit and treated so that harmful concns. of contaminants are never reached. The oxidation treatment is carried out with a broad band UV source, and the H2O2 concn. is adjusted to match the oxygen demand.
