The device has a carburettor (1) in the induction region of the engine (3) with a choke flap (2) pivotable about a rotation axis and a choke flap shaft (13) mechanically connected to an accelerator lever (8). There is a sensor (9) for detecting the current revolution rate of the engine crankshaft (6). The choke flap is actuated by a mechanism (16) depending on the sensor signal so as to close. The mechanism acts on mechanical transfer elements (10) arranged between the choke flap shaft and the accelerator lever. The closure movement is decoupled from the accelerator lever movement.
