Setting-up apparatus for a sewing machine

A setting-up apparatus for a sewing machine (1) comprises: (a) a case (2) in which stitch-forming elements (8, 9, 14) include an up-and-down reciprocating needle; (b) a shaft (10) which moves in a way which bears a fixed relationship to the needle motion; and (c) a device (48) which can be set in two operational states, namely one where the shaft is locked relative to the case and another where the shaft is set free in a resting state. Adjustment or inspection of the position of at least one of the stitch-forming elements relative to the case or to one of the other elements can be undertaken when the setting-up apparatus is in the locked state. A controller (31), connected to the apparatus for activating it, has a first memory for data representing the actual angular position of the shaft, a second memory for data on at least one set-point for the angular position, a unit for entering these two sets of data and a comparator for comparing these data. When there is coincidence between actual and set-point data the apparatus is activated and an input device receives a signal which causes the operational state of the apparatus to be switched over.
