The safety closure prevents the access door (1) to the machine from being opened until the machine is in a safe condition via a mechanical catch (3,6) and a cooperating locking device (5,13), released in dependence on the machine condition. The locking device incorporates a limited amount of play for restricted opening of the door, with the restricted opening detected via a sensor (7) providing a stop signal for the machine, before the door can be fully opened.
