The burner is for gaseous or liquid fuel, heating furnace chambers directly or indirectly. Over the length of its heating surface (9) the tubular recuperator (4) varies in its external and/or internal annular cross-section (1, 2) corresponding to the alterations in volume of the exhaust and combustion-air currents. The alteration can be continuous or in steps, and can extend over only part of the length. The tapering inner and outer tubes (10, 11) of the recuperator can form guide funnels of thin heat- and scale-resistant sheet steel or fireproof material such as vacuum-moulded ceramic fibre. ADVANTAGE - Low exhaust- and air-pressure loss, high thermal efficiency, compact, and light in weight.
