A gas scrubbing process, esp. for SO2 removal using an aq. alkaline suspension as scrubbing liq., involves passing the gas stream successively through at least one scrubbing stage, a gas/liq. sepn. stage and a further scrubbing stage, the scrubbing liq. falling as uniformly distributed sprays in both scrubbing stages and the scrubbing liq. of the scrubbing stage above the sepn. stage being separated from the gas stream in the sepn. stage. The novelty is that the spray, entering the sepn. stage, is collected and discharged as several substreams, between which the gas stream can pass as several substreams into the scrubbing stage downstream of the sepn. stage.
