Recombinant nucleic acid sequences coding for proteins with at least one hydrophobic or transmembrane domain (e.g. secretory or membrane proteins), said recombinant nucleic acid sequences being capable of significantly increasing both the production/assembly yield and the correct insertion into the membrane (addressing, targeting to, passage through or insertion into, e.g., the endoplasmic reticulum membrane) of the protein expressed in a heterologous eukaryotic cell, are disclosed. The uses of said nucleic acid sequences in the production of secretory or membrane proteins in a heterologous eukaryotic cell are also disclosed. Said nucleic acid sequences consist of a natural or recombinant gene G (hereinafter designated gene G) coding for a protein P of a eukaryotic organism A, including at least one hydrophobic or transmembrane domain. The nucleic acid sequences include a zone Z located approximately 50-85 codons down from a zone H coding for said hydrophobic or transmembrane domain, and capable of controlling the translation rate of said protein P in a heterologous eukaryotic organism B in which said protein P is expressed.
