Removal of pollutants, especially nitrogen oxides, from exhaust gas and other combustion gases using a filter and a catalyst is claimed, in which at less than 300 deg C a defined amount of the new or consumed catalyst and ammonia as reactant is added to the exhaust gas stream. The catalyst and the ammonia are reacted with the exhaust gas so that nitrogen and water are formed from the nitrogen oxides added to the exhaust gas, and ammonia. The remaining catalyst is circulated with hot air, so that it is decontaminated and reused. Also claimed is an apparatus for carrying out the process.
