The device rectifies (12) the voltage from an AC source (11) by means of a diode bridge and capacitors which prevent emission of noise and suppress peaks of current. A smoothing capacitor (13) furnishes DC to a driver circuit including a diode, MOSFET and storage capacitor. The discharge is struck by a high-voltage generator (18) after preheating (17) of the lamp electrodes. The polarity is reversed with a frequency given by a control circuit which maintains it above a critical frequency.
