The invention concerns an inflatable lateral head-protection system in a passenger car, the system comprising an airbag (5) whose end sections are secured at suitable points (6a, 6c), in particular to the A-pillar (1) and the C-pillar (3). In the non-inflated state, the airbag (5) is covered such that it follows the course of the roof spar (4) between the A-pillar (1) and C-pillar (3). The invention proposes various ways of covering the airbag (5) and securing it to the roof spar (4). Either separate lining parts (19) which form a preassembled unit together with the airbag (5) can be provided, or the headlining (9) is formed in an appropriate manner so as to accommodate the airbag (5) which is secured, for example, by a burr-and-loop type fastening (8) to the roof spar (4) and can be located in a protective tube (7).
