A thermosetting elastomeric component 1 and a thermoplastics component 3, such as a seal and a carrier eg. for use in making a sealed pipe joint, are separately formed, assembled as required and then secured together, before use, by application of heat to the thermoplastics component to melt and bond a surface portion of that component to an adjacent surface portion of the other component. Preferably ultrasonic heating is used. The bond 15 may be continuous or discontinuous. In one embodiment the elastomeric material is a vulcanisable epdm based rubber elastomer and the thermoplastics material is a polyolefin. In another embodiment the elastomeric material is a nitrile based rubber elastomer with a pvc content of less then 5%; the material of the thermoplastics component is pvc. <IMAGE> |
